R.E.P.O. puts players in the role of retrieval specialists, tasked with recovering valuable items from abandoned, haunted environments. Each player is equipped with a physics-based grabbing tool, allowing them to lift, drag, and carry objects with realistic weight and movement. From delicate glassware to heavy industrial equipment, every object requires careful handling to avoid damage — or making too much noise, which could alert something lurking nearby. Every mission is a test of both coordination and precision.
In Repo, up to five players work together, using proximity voice chat to coordinate their actions. This system forces players to stay close to communicate clearly, but proximity also means any loud sound can attract hostile forces roaming the area. Monsters react to movement and to environmental sounds caused by player mistakes, such as dropping objects or accidentally knocking over furniture. Careful teamwork becomes just as important as fast thinking, especially when players are forced to split up to cover more ground.
After each successful mission, players in r.e.p.o earn money that can be spent on upgrades, improving their equipment and abilities for future jobs. Stronger grabbing tools allow for easier handling of heavy items, while quieter movement upgrades reduce the risk of attracting enemies. Each upgrade allows teams to adapt their approach, whether focusing on stealth, speed, or defensive options. With every retrieval, players survive another night and unlock new strategies, making each mission more complex and rewarding.
